Leinster Senior League Div 1A: Old Belvedere RFC 22 – 21 UCD RFC
Ahead by 21 points to 8 entering the last quarter, a relatively comfortable win seemed likely for Collidge but Belvo had other ideas and two late tries swung the game in their favour with the last kick conversion being the winning score.
Played in ideal conditions on an excellent pitch it took both teams a while to settle given that this was a first outing in more than 18 months. The deadlock was broken by the home team on 16 minutes with an intercept in midfield, quick hands stretched the Collidge cover for a touch-down in the corner for an unconverted try (5-0). Belvo increased their lead with a 29 th minute penalty (8-0). Approaching half-time Bobby Sheehan touched down in the corner from the back of a maul for a try which James Tarrant converted (7-8). Shortly thereafter an excellent JT cross-field kick was gathered by Alex O’Grady to touch down for a try which JT converted. Half-time: Old Belvedere 8 UCD 14.
Just two minutes into the second half a Bobby Sheehan break opened a hole on the Belvo 22 and Rob Gilsenan took full advantage from Sheehan’s pass to cut through for a well-taken try beside the posts which Niall Carroll converted (8-21). That unfortunately proved to be the end of the Collidge scoring as Belvo ran in two late tries for a deserving win. Full-time: Old Belvedere 21 UCD 21.
