Collidge SA Tour Summary

UCD RFC SA Tour 2016  (by Kevin Croke)

Towards the end of the 2015-16 season discussions began regarding the possibility of the 1st XV touring South Africa, returning to venues visited on the 2010 Tour. The aim of Tour was to provide opportunity to advance pre-season preparations for the coming UBL season. The inclusion of a number of U20 and J1 players added a significant amount to the trip.

Having received intention to tour from a requisite number of players, fundraising began with the “Blue Ball” and bag-packing helping to secure the required finances to travel.

On Thursday 4th August the players and management for the Tour assembled at Dublin Airport … the excited bunch ready to venture into South Africa (via Instanbul).

Riebeek Valley

The Rugby Performance Center in the Riebeek Valley provided the first venue for the Tour and is the training base of the Boland Cavaliers who have just qualified for the premier competition in the Currie Cup. This scenic venue provided the ideal location to start the rugby preparation and also to allow the group to get to know each other better.

A highlight of the stay in the RPC was the talk by local historian Claire Boland who entertained the players with tales of the original settlers to the area and their struggles with local wildlife .. commonly known as “the settlers and the wolves”.

Game 1

Our first game on tour was against Villagers RFC who have recently returned to the premier division of the Western Cape and hold the prestigious position of the oldest rugby club in South Africa. The game proved to be a strong reflection of the work put in thus far with Collidge’s attacking shape creating a number of scoring opportunities and Philip Crowe opened the scoring early on and the tourists continued to run the score out to 53 points with none conceded.

Stellenbosch provided a strong contrast to the remote setting of the RPC. A picturesque town, it is quite compact and modern. The stay in Stellenbosch started with a gym and recovery session on day one before training took another step up as we prepared for a night game versus Stellenbosch University.

Game 2

The game versus Stellenbosch again served as a testament to the application shown in training by the touring side. The early exchanges we dominated by Collidge, leaving the hosts with a lot of decisions to be made and frequent team meetings hosted beneath their posts!

The UCD play continued to develop and took a more cohesive shape throughout the game, added to this the set piece play was beginning to assert dominance.

Throughout the second-half the replacements bench was emptied. These fresh legs helped to up the ante and keep everyone fresh for game 3 against False Bay, ambition was high as players made their way on to the pitch to show what they can do.

Game 3

The final game on tour saw a return to previous hosts False Bay RFC. This match held great expectation as the final game on tour with the team looking for a third successive win. The game started well for Collidge, after getting a score on the board early the team went on to control first-half possession. The scores kept coming and by the half-time Collidge had established a commanding 45 point lead.
