The first season in which rugby Colours were awarded in UCD was 1930/31.  The match was against Queen's University Belfast in Lansdowne Road on 14th November, 1930.

The following season University College Cork were the opponents for the Colours match in the UCD grounds in Terenure and that sequence, alternating between QUB and UCC, continued until 1952. In that season, the Dublin Colours match was introduced for which both UCD and Trinity awarded Colours. In prior years Trinity had awarded Colours for matches with Oxford/Cambridge.

A number of articles have been written over the years relating to the early Colours matches - some of which follow:

From 1930 to 1952 rugby Colours were awarded by UCD for matches with QUB and UCC in alternate years. In 1952 a permanent arrangement was initiated for a match between the two Dublin universities - UCD and Trinity and each university agreed to award rugby colours annually for this match. This area of the Centenary Wall (Section 2) documents the season, captain, opponent, result and venue of the matches over the years. Press reports, team lists and photos are being accumulated and those available to date can be seen in Sections 3 to 9 in this area of the Centenary Wall.
